Michaelmas has seen a very successful start for Shrewsbury Model United Nations (MUN), with 24 awards from Model UN conferences being brought back to school, including two delegation/team awards.
Cheadle Hulme School Model UN Conference
On the weekend of 4th–5th October, 18 Salopians represented the school at the 25th Model United Nations (MUN) hosted by Cheadle Hulme School, winning 11 awards at our most competitive conference of the year. Remarkably, our UK delegation secured the Highly Commended Delegation trophy, marking the fourth year in a row that Shrewsbury has achieved this honour. The conference was split over two days. On Day One, we split into groups, called committees, to discuss pre-determined issues which we had prepared for. On Day Two, we went into larger forums to debate a surprise fictional “crisis” issue, involving unscrupulous billionaires, child labour, and illegal occupation of an island.
Our A Team, the UK delegation – comprised of co-head of Model UN Matthew W (SH, UVI), Harrison W (CH, LVI), Faisal A-N (S, LVI), Elsa L (M, LVI), and Anny M (G, V) – won the “Highly Commended” delegation trophy – the fourth year we have been awarded this accolade. All five of our UK team members won awards.
In total, 10 individual prizes were awarded to Salopians. On Day One, three students earned ‘Highly Commended Delegate’ awards: Matthew W (SH, UVI), Faisal A-N (S, LVI), and Jasper H (R, UVI). Four students were named Commended Delegates: Kouki H (I, UVI), Harrison W (CH, LVI), Elsa L (M, LVI), and Anny M (G, V). Kate R (EDH, IV) received a Special Mention. On top of their committee awards, Matthew W received a second Highly Commended award for his performance in the Day Two crisis debate; similarly, Anny M earned a Commended Delegate award for the same debate.
Special congratulations also go to George R (SH, UVI) and co-head of Model UN Chloe L (MSH, UVI), who chaired the Security and Arts Council respectively.
Last but not least, an immense thank you to Ms von Kuk and Mr Zafar, who gave up their weekend to take us to Cheadle Hulme.
The Queen’s School Chester Model UN Conference
We achieved outstanding success at the Queen’s Chester’s 5th Model UN conference on the 15th of November 2025, winning the Best Delegation award for the second year in a row. Representing Russia and Panama, we are so proud of Shrewsbury MUN students for sweeping the individual awards.
Out of our twenty delegates, an exceptional thirteen returned with awards. Four students achieved the top award of ‘Outstanding Delegate’: Matthew W (SH, UVI) in the Security Council, Faisal A-N (S, LVI) in the Politics & Ethics Council, Jared G (R, LVI) in Disarmament, and, notably, Aurora C (G, III Form) in the Youth Committee – a brilliant accomplishment for a Third Former. In addition, Sophie L (QEH, III Form) was awarded Best Young Delegate (below Sixth Form) in the Youth Committee.
A further three students earned Highly Commended awards: congratulations to Alistair T (CH, LVI), Subaru U (SH, UVI), and Harrison W (CH, LVI). Five more were awarded Commended: Maya B (G, LVI), Lucy B (G, LVI), Remus Y (O, LVI), Hannah M (MSH, LVI), and Harry F (SH, UVI).
Special congratulations must also go to Kate R (EDH, LVI) and Kouki H (I, UVI) for chairing the Youth and Disarmament committee respectively. Last but certainly not least, a sincere thank you to Ms von Kuk and Dr Oakley for giving up their Saturdays to take us to Chester!
Overall, a very successful start. We hope to do well in the upcoming conferences hosted by Manchester Grammar School in December, and by Manchester High School for Girls in February. We expect our highlight of the year to be in March when we host our annual Shrewsbury Model UN conference, or ShrewsMUN, which will be in its 10th iteration in 2026 – certainly an exciting landmark.
Matthew W (SH, UVI)
