The Countdown is on to Shrewsbury School's Sponsored Walk for the Shewsy

As a whole school community, along with our friends from Everton, we are very much looking forward to the Whole School Sponsored Walk in aid of The Shewsy on Thursday 24th September 2026.

Every five years or so over the past 50 years and more, we have gone out to enjoy some of the beautiful Shropshire scenery undertaking the challenge of a long-distance walk – all to show our collective support for The Shewsy and, most importantly of all, to raise much needed funds.

The tradition stretches back to at least 1969, when the first sponsored walk recorded in The Salopian raised an impressive £7,000. In the decades that followed, sponsored walks became a regular feature of School life. Many of these fundraising efforts helped support projects such as the replacement of The Shewsy minibus and the continued development of the club’s facilities and programmes.

All funds raised will help The Shewsy sustain and further develop its youth work programmes, with particular support directed towards the refurbishment of its sports hall, originally funded by Shrewsbury School in the 1980s. At the time, the facility provided a safe and welcoming space for young people and the wider community to enjoy sport. More than 25 years on, the sports hall is now in need of significant investment. 

The aim of this year's Sponsored Walk is to raise as much funding as possible towards a major redevelopment project, including the refurbishment of the sports hall, new changing facilities and a new entrance. This investment is particularly important at a time when many young people face significant barriers to education, employment and training. The Shewsy has recently welcomed a dedicated Pathways youth worker whose sole focus is supporting 16–18-year-olds into employment, helping to address the growing challenge of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). In a community where around a third of young people face these challenges, the need for support, guidance and opportunity has never been greater.

Our partnership with The Shewsy stretches back to 1903, when teachers from Shrewsbury School helped found the club. Today, that relationship remains as strong as ever. Through this Sponsored Walk, we have an opportunity to invest in the futures of hundreds of young people, ensuring The Shewsy can continue to provide a safe, supportive and inspiring environment for generations to come.  

As in 2021, we hope to raise a significant total amount and every pupil is encouraged to raise as much as they can.
