The Eco Committee held its first meeting of the academic year and set an upbeat, purposeful tone. We opened with a discussion of positive tipping points, the small individual actions that, taken together, can spark bigger shifts in behaviour and awareness. This idea will guide our projects throughout the year.

We also welcomed our new House Representatives, who will play a key role in widening student participation, helping to run events, and coordinating volunteers.

Plans for the year ahead include:

  • Continuing the Eco Journal with regular student contributions
  • Developing the Pollinators’ Garden
  • Running a second-hand clothes sale in the Lent Term
  • Collaborating with KH on reducing food waste in school

Our first practical priority is the scything of the school meadow, which was highlighted in the Tatler Schools Guide 2026, as being one of the places Shrewsbury’s nature lovers can enjoy.  A specialist will be scything the meadow from the 23rd of September until the 26th, with help from members of the Eco Committee on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Scything is an important alternative to mowing; it’s far less disruptive to habitats and supports biodiversity.

Call for volunteers (no experience needed):

We are looking for members of the school community to help with meadow scything next week on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th during the afternoons. Tools and guidance will be provided.

If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mrs Matthews (JAM).
