Shrewsbury 1st XI Crowned County Champions After Hard-Fought Final

Shrewsbury School’s 1st XI hosted Wrekin College and Ellesmere College in the County Finals. The team opened with a dominant 8–0 victory over Wrekin College, setting up a much-anticipated final against Ellesmere – a consistently strong and competitive side over the past five years.
Ellesmere came into the final determined to end Shrewsbury’s three-year reign as county champions. Organised, skillful, and fiercely competitive, they made it a thrilling contest. Shrewsbury controlled much of the first half, creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from the Ellesmere goalkeeper.
In the second half, Shrewsbury continued to play positive, attacking hockey and eventually broke the deadlock with a decisive goal from Maggie W (Grove). The final ten minutes were tense, as Shrewsbury were reduced to nine players following two green cards for poor tackles. However, the team showed great resilience, with Hannah I (Queen Elizabeth Hall) producing several top-class saves to preserve the lead. A determined defensive effort saw Shrewsbury hold on for a hard-fought 1–0 victory and secure qualification for the Midlands Finals in November.
With both the 1st XI and U16 teams now qualified for the Midlands Finals, all eyes turn to the U14s, who compete in their County Finals today. We hope they can match the success of the older age groups and complete a triple representation for Shrewsbury School at the regional stage.
