At Shrewsbury, education is about far more than academic study, it is about developing compassion, integrity, and a sense of responsibility towards others.
This term, a new pupil volunteering group has launched to support The Shrewsbury Hygiene Bank, a charity that collects and redistributes essential toiletries to those most in need across Shropshire.
Each week, pupils will help to sort and package donations of hygiene products, ready for delivery to local schools and charities. This partnership not only provides practical support to the community, but also gives pupils an opportunity to live out the school’s values of kindness, service, and community spirit, all central to Shrewsbury’s model of whole person education.
One of the members of the group, Sofia L (V, MSH), shared her motivation for getting involved:
“As my Thursday afternoon activity, I’ve chosen Volunteering, and this year I’m really pleased to be able to work with The Hygiene Bank Shrewsbury. My mum is the volunteer coordinator for the charity in Shropshire, and I’ve helped her for the last few years at home. I suggested last year that she try to get some help from Shrewsbury School with the project, and Mrs Pritchard and Ms Williams kindly made that happen.
“The charity collects donations of unopened hygiene products and redistributes them to local charities, who in turn pass them on to people in Shropshire who need them most. We also fundraise to buy extra products. The charity is very close to my heart as I hate to think of people who have to choose between buying food one week or products such as soap, shampoo, and period products. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be a girl at school without access to these essentials.
“The tagline of the charity is #everybodydeservestobeclean — and I really believe that is true.”
