Dr Torin Morgan, Head of Biology, and Mr Toby Percival, Head of Sixth Form and Higher Education, have been recognised as Morehead-Cain Impact Educators, celebrating the profound and lasting impact they have had on pupils’ lives.

The award recognises educators who have played a pivotal role in supporting candidates for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards to a university in the United States. Dr Morgan was nominated by Meg H, and Mr Percival by Will M, both Shrewsbury pupils and Morehead-Cain finalists, in recognition of the guidance, encouragement and mentorship they received throughout the highly competitive application process.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship offers a fully funded four-year education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is awarded to a small number of exceptional students worldwide. Selection is based not only on outstanding academic achievement, but also on leadership, character, service and commitment beyond the classroom.  Shrewsbury has a strong connection with the Morehead-Cain, with several former pupils receiving the scholarship, including current scholars Finn Sansom and Joss Gowar.

Morehead-Cain Scholars benefit from extensive enrichment opportunities, including funded summer programmes, leadership development and access to a global alumni network. Recognition as an Impact Educator places Dr Morgan and Mr Percival among a select group of teachers internationally whose influence is acknowledged as instrumental in shaping future leaders, and reflects Shrewsbury School’s commitment to whole person education and exceptional university preparation.

Dr Torin Morgan, Head of Biology, said: “Meg is a truly remarkable young woman. Academically in the topflight, she also maintains her status as an elite athlete, all the while carrying out her many roles and responsibilities with a sense of humour and an easy grace, wearing the invisible crown of leadership lightly.

“As if that wasn't enough, she's been keen to engage with every super-curricular opportunity we could throw at her, notably winning through to the final of Imperial College's 2025 "Science in Medicine" Team Competition.

“I was delighted to hear she had made it to the Morehead-Cain finals, but to have been nominated by her as an Impact Educator ranks among the greatest honours I have received in my career.”

Mr Toby Percival, Head of Sixth Form and Higher Education, who has received the award for a third consecutive year, said: "I am deeply honoured to be recognised by the Morehead-Cain foundation as an Impact Educator and am most touched that Will nominated me. His impact not only in school but in the local community, marks him out as a most impressive young man. Whether on the football pitch, leading the school's eco-committee or his wide range of volunteering, he always gives his all.

“The foundation's commitment to developing leaders of compassion, courage, humility and curiosity mirrors that of Shrewsbury and it is no surprise to me that the scholarship is so popular with Salopians. I am incredibly fortunate to work with pupils who are willing to challenge themselves and engage deeply in all parts of school and wider life, encouraged and nurtured by my fantastic colleagues.”

Meg H (M, UVI), said: “I nominated Dr Morgan because he has injected my learning with a real passion and curiosity for Biology and for understanding the mechanisms of the world. It's been refreshing to learn a subject from someone with such deep appreciation for both its complexities and its impact. Over the last 2 years my curiosity has been indulged in and as a result, learning has felt as exciting as it should do.”

Will M (S, UVI), said:

“Mr Percival’s support throughout my time in the Sixth Form has been exceptional. During my US applications, he devoted countless hours to refining essays and guiding me through a complex process with patience and clarity. His knowledge of the US admissions system is extensive, and his insight at every stage gave me real confidence.  When I doubted whether I should apply to the Morehead-Cain, he was the one who encouraged me to believe in myself and aim higher.”

“As my tutor, he has been a constant source of steady encouragement — even keeping morale high with the brownies he makes for our weekly tutor group meetings! I am incredibly fortunate to have had his guidance during my years at Shrewsbury.”
