Reflections on an special trip to Kenya

During the Easter break, 17 Salopians, 2 members of the Shewsy and 4 members of staff embarked on the School’s biennial trip to Kenya.
During the trip, the party was split into two groups, with each group spending a week at Restart Africa and a week in the Maasai Mara, learning about the outstanding conservation work at the Enonkishu Conservancy.

Our time at Restart Africa was truly special. Our students had the chance to see first-hand how fundraising at the school has impacted the lives of those who call Restart Africa home. We played, read and danced with the children of Restart, learning more about their culture and dreams, and forging strong friendships that will impact our students for the rest of their lives. In addition to this, we visited the original Restart Centre, a shack in the Gilgil slums, visited St Peter’s School, took a trip to the Kipipiri mountain range and had talks from both Mary Coulson and Luke about how Restart began and the development of the centre over the years.
On Saturday 28th March, the groups swapped, taking a breathtaking 40-minute flight from Gilgil to the Maasai Mara. The plane, chartered by Yellow Wings, was piloted by U6 Former Toby S (pictured below) and provided an amazing opportunity to see Kenya from the air. Once we touched down in the Mara, the students had the opportunity to swap stories about their experiences in each location.

In the Maasai Mara, Salopians enjoyed a wonderful week of animal sightings, conservation talks and learning the ways of the Maasai tribe. The group completed three days of safari, completing the “Big 5”. Highlights included seeing prides of lions, a lone leopard, and herds of elephants. These were among the 80 or so species we encountered. In addition, we visited a local school, a rhino sanctuary and a Maasai village. The trip was rounded off with a talk from Lippa and Tarquin Wood, who explained how Collection in the Wild came to be.

Reflecting on her time in Kenya, Clara M (EDH, LVI) said, “The recent visit to Kenya was certainly one that will never be forgotten. In our first week, we were greeted with such warmth in the Maasai Mara, visiting the homes of the locals and the habitats of the spectacular animals. This was followed by the most heart-warming week surrounded by the kindest, happiest and most spirited young people in Restart Africa. They welcomed us with open arms into their family from day one. For me, this created a memory that I will hold onto forever and cherish.
What stood out to me the most was the pride the children at Restart took in their home. On the first day, I was paraded around, arm in arm through the garden by many smiling faces, as they showed me, encouraging me to try every plant and piece of fruit in their garden. They were so proud of what they had. This will always stand out to me as a moment which I will reflect on and be forever grateful for. Restart taught me so much, whilst continually testing how quickly I could play hide and seek and learn Swahili!”
The trip was a huge success, and we very much look forward to going again in 2028. Our heartfelt thanks go to Mary Coulson, Debs Boyd-Moss, Victor Juma, Lippa and Tarquin Wood, Christian Strebel and all staff at Pembroke House School, Restart Africa and Wild Hub; without their help and support, the trip would not have taken place. Finally, thanks go to Mr Brogan, Mrs Pritchard, and Mr Kealy for helping to staff the trip.
