Shrewsbury School has been awarded the Oppidan Gold Mentoring Award, the only school to receive the accolade for the second year running.

The national award celebrates schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to mentoring, recognising the positive impact that peer support can have on pupils' confidence, wellbeing and personal development.

Mentoring is a key part of life at Shrewsbury, where senior pupils are encouraged to support younger members of the School community through formal and informal leadership opportunities. The programme helps pupils develop valuable skills including communication, empathy and responsibility, while fostering a culture of kindness and mutual support.

The recognition also extends across the wider Shrewsbury family of schools. Shrewsbury International School Bangkok Riverside was awarded Silver, highlighting a shared commitment to purposeful mentoring and whole person education.

Shrewsbury School’s Headmaster, Leo Winkley, said:

"We are delighted to be the only school to receive the Oppidan Gold Mentoring Award for the second year running, recognising the role that other pupils can play in guiding and supporting younger ones.

“It is also excellent to see this recognition reflected across Shrewsbury’s Global Family of Schools, with Shrewsbury International School Bangkok Riverside, receiving a Silver Award. Together, these awards highlight the shared commitment across our schools to nurturing character, confidence and kindness through purposeful mentoring.

“Mentoring is a powerful expression of our commitment to whole person education, developing leadership and empathy in our senior pupils while supporting the growth and wellbeing of younger members of our community.

“This culture extends beyond our own School through our award-winning Partnership and Community Engagement programme, where pupils use these same leadership skills to support and inspire young people from our partner schools.

“These awards are a testament to the dedication of our outstanding teachers and pupils, and a true reflection of our 'survival of the kindest' ethos at Shrewsbury."
