Shrewsbury School is celebrating an exceptional achievement as two Upper Sixth pupils, Meg H (UVI, M) and Will M (UVI, S), have been offered the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to study at the University of North Carolina, US.
Their success makes Shrewsbury the only school outside of the US to receive two scholarship offers this year, and the school with the highest number of recipients in the UK. The school has a proud tradition with scholarships to US colleges: Meg and Will will follow several alumni in joining the Morehead-Cain community, with two former pupils currently on the programme. More than a dozen others are currently studying in the US on merit-based, academic and sports scholarships at universities like Duke, Boston University and George Washington University, alongside those at Ivy League universities who do not provide scholarships.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is the oldest and amongst the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships in the United States. It provides a fully funded four-year education at UNC Chapel Hill and is awarded to a small number of exceptional students worldwide. Selection is based not only on academic excellence, but also on leadership, character and commitment to contributing to the world beyond the classroom.
It is precisely these qualities that lie at the heart of Shrewsbury’s educational philosophy. The school’s whole person approach encourages pupils to develop intellectual curiosity alongside leadership, compassion, creativity and a commitment to contributing positively to the communities around them.
Meg and Will’s success therefore represents a powerful external validation of the distinctive qualities valued in a Salopian education. Judged through one of the most rigorous international scholarship processes, their selection reflects their academic distinction as well as their character, initiative and breadth of participation that define the Shrewsbury pupil experience.
Shrewsbury School Headmaster Leo Winkley said:
“We’re incredibly proud of Meg and Will in securing these exceptional opportunities to study in the US on fully funded scholarships. They are exemplary Salopians with bright futures ahead of them.
“The Morehead-Cain Scholarship seeks young people who combine intellectual curiosity with leadership, character and a commitment to the wider community. Those qualities are central to our whole person approach to education.”
Head of School Meg H said: “I am humbled to have received the Morehead Cain Scholarship. More valuable than any interview practice or essay advice, Shrewsbury provided a space for me to grow outside of the classroom; to indulge in passions and express the leadership potential that scholarships like this one look for.”
Will M said: “I was both humbled and surprised to be offered the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, and I’m excited to make the most of the opportunities it offers—particularly as a springboard into a career in sustainability.
“Shrewsbury provided me with the tools and support to present my strongest application, especially through regular guidance from the Futures department on essays and interview preparation. The school’s emphasis on a well-rounded education is an excellent fit for the US system, and I am incredibly grateful for the support and advice I received from Old Salopians ahead of the final selection process.”
Meg and Will’s achievements also reflect the dedication of the teachers who supported them throughout the highly competitive application process. Mr Toby Percival, Head of Sixth Form, and Dr Torin Morgan, Head of Biology have both been recognised by the Morehead-Cain Foundation as Impact Educators, celebrating the profound positive influence they have had on their pupils’ development.
