Mobile Phone Use in School: An Update

At the start of this term, we launched a school-wide conversation on mobile phone access—a topic that has sparked thoughtful discussion.
We’re grateful for the engagement and input we’ve received so far and wanted to update you on where things currently stand.
In September, we hosted a parent event to explore the challenges and opportunities around mobile phone use in school. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion. For those who were unable to attend, a recording of the event remains available on the Parent Portal. We encourage you to watch it at your convenience. The current mobile phone policy was also shared with all parents via email in September. If you’d like to revisit it, please check your inbox.
Alongside the event, we launched a parent questionnaire to gather broader feedback. If you haven’t yet had the chance to share your views, the questionnaire is still open—we’d love to hear from you. Parent Mobile Phone Survey Link
Both the House and School Councils have met to reflect on the role of mobile phones in school life, particularly around distraction and wellbeing. Their discussions were thoughtful and honest. Unsurprisingly, many students expressed a preference for fewer restrictions!
Current government guidelines on mobile phone use in schools, along with ongoing safeguarding concerns—particularly around unrestricted 3G/4G/5G data access—mean it is unlikely we will be able to relax existing rules. Our priority remains ensuring a safe and focused learning environment for all Salopians and to work with all stakeholders to find a balance which takes into account suitable access but also is mindful that there are opportunities within this wonderful school that should come before scrolling in devices.
We have a school-wide pupil survey planned for after half term to ensure every pupil has the opportunity to share their perspective. We aim to communicate any updates to our mobile phone policy by the end of term, with a view to implementing changes that may occur from January.
