Smart Glasses: Important Update for Parents and Guardians

Parents and guardians will recently have received a letter from Assistant Deputy Head Mr Henry Exham, outlining the School’s position on the emerging use of Smart Glasses.
As highlighted in the letter, which you can read here, this new technology, such as Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, now makes discreet recording, live-streaming, and instant sharing increasingly accessible.
While innovative, these devices raise significant concerns within a school setting, particularly around privacy, safeguarding, and data protection. Smart glasses can capture images or video without consent and may inadvertently reveal sensitive or identifying information about pupils, staff, or visitors. Their use could also potentially breach UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
To ensure Shrewsbury remains a safe and secure environment, the School has introduced a clear policy: smart glasses are not permitted on site for pupils, parents, visitors, or staff. Should they be brought onto campus, they must be removed and stored away until they can be taken home. This approach is consistent with the guidance shared by other boarding schools.
Thank you for your support in helping us respond responsibly to new technologies while prioritising the wellbeing and privacy of all members of our community. If you have any questions about the guidance, please contact Henry Exham directly on [email protected]
