Shrewsbury School marked its 474th birthday with a memorable celebration, welcoming Anna Turner, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, for a special visit to the School.

Headmaster Leo Winkley said:

“Mrs Turner also visited our Taylor Library and Archives to view our current exhibition and various notable items related to Charles Darwin.

"Earlier on in the visit, the Lord-Lieutenant observed heats of the Bentley Elocution Prize, one of Shrewsbury's distinctive cultural events celebrating the public recitation of poetry learned by heart.

“His Majesty visited Shrewsbury in 2001, when he was Prince of Wales, to open the Maidment Building, our Music School. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited Shrewsbury School in 1952 to open the Queen's Terrace, situated on the riverside of our iconic Main School Building (pictured).

“A lovely way to mark our 474th Birthday.”
