Old Salopians

July was a busy month for the OS Maps – the Old Salopian Rugby Club.

The team played two tournaments and five Old Salopians made their debuts for the team.  They started their summer campaign with the Cheltenham 7s tournament, followed by the JF7s which took place at Wimbledon this year.

At Cheltenham, the team grappled with the downpours which have dominated the holidays so far. It affected their style of play and also their night’s sleep after one of the team forgot the tent poles! Undeterred they put up on a gritty performance but lost their first two group games. However, the Salopian spirit won through when their third opponents decided to forfeit due to the rain handing victory to the Maps by default.

The following weekend the team were in action at Wimbledon where they entered the ‘Super Social’ competition determined to continue their streak of winning a tournament each year. The name was deceptive and the standard was extremely high, but the Maps rose to the occasion. They won two but lost one which saw them progress to the semi-final of the plate competition. Here they defied the odds and pulled off an epic victory against Bournemouth University. High on their underdog story they went into the final against the home team Wimbledon Old Boys. The game was tense but evenly matched, with the Maps scoring on the final play but missing the conversion to finish the game 12-12. A nerve-racking “golden-try” ensued with Wimbledon striking first to win the plate.

After an ending to be proud of, the OS Maps next look forward to their AGM in Shrewsbury over Christmas.
