Shrewsbury School joins millions of people across Europe today in celebrating the European Day of Languages, an occasion founded by the Council of Europe to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity, intercultural understanding, and the joy of learning new languages.

To mark this special day, our sixth form MFL Ambassadors have planned a series of language activities for tutor groups ranging from idioms, guessing the word and even learning something about Georgian.

We are also looking forward to hearing our linguists perform some poetry recitals in French, German and Spanish for our MFL Speaking Competition on Friday evening at 7.30pm in QUOD.

Language learning at Shrewsbury is more than an academic pursuit; it is a gateway to different perspectives, new friendships, and global opportunities. As Charles Darwin, our most famous Old Salopian, once observed, adaptability is key to thriving and learning languages equips pupils with the skills to adapt, connect, and flourish in a global society.

Mr Richard Yardley, Head of German at Shrewsbury School, said:

“The European Day of Languages is a chance for our pupils to see languages not just as subjects to be studied, but as living, breathing connections to other people and cultures.

“It reminds us that every new word learned is a step towards greater understanding, empathy and friendship.

“Although recent reports suggest that interest in formal language study is declining, at Shrewsbury it remains an integral part of our learning culture.

On European Day of Languages, Will R (LVI, SH), a German pupil at Shrewsbury, reflects on why he enjoys learning languages:

“Learning languages is so important as it helps you to understand the culture and perspectives of other people.

“I enjoy the process of learning a language, starting from the basics to fluency. There are lots of opportunities at Shrewsbury to learn languages, at A level and beyond.”

Shrewsbury’s celebration of the European Day of Languages reflects our Floreat ethos and commitment to whole-person education. It is a reminder that at Shrewsbury, learning is not only rigorous and ambitious, but also rich in curiosity, creativity, and plenty of Serious Fun.

Mr Richard Yardley, Head of German at Shrewsbury School.
