Stories of Hope: Understanding Stem Cell Research

Before half-term, we hosted a truly inspiring dialogue lecture focusing on stem cell research and its vital importance in the fight against cancer.
The event brought together a panel of four remarkable speakers, each offering a unique and deeply personal perspective on the subject.
Among them was old Salopian Ellie Pearson, who shared her experiences of seeing the impact of stem cell treatment firsthand through her mother, Tracey Pearson. Tracey spoke movingly about her journey as a cancer patient and the life-changing stem cell transplant that gave her a second chance and all the challenges she went through which still last to this day.
We also heard from Pete, a patient still waiting for a matching stem cell donor. Despite his own challenges, Pete now works with DKMS, the stem cell awareness charity, where he helps educate people on stem cells and increase the number of donors. His story was a powerful reminder of how important donations are to be able to give more people a second chance.
Finally, a haematologist from the university of Sheffield gave an expert’s insight into the science behind stem cell transplants and the groundbreaking research currently underway in the field and how a cheek swap could save lives.
The lecture has the perfect balance between education and moving stories. We wanted to thank Mrs. Pritchard, Mr. Wain and Dr. Morgan, for helping us organise such a successful event.
