During Exeat, 19 Salopians travelled to Argentina as part of Shrewsbury’s exchange programme with Colegio San Bartolomé.
Immersed in South American life, pupils spent a week living with host families, practising their Spanish daily and gaining invaluable insight into Argentinian culture.
Experiencing Rosario meant truly immersing themselves in the country’s vibrant traditions. The group kicked off their first day watching an electric match at Rosario Central Stadium, surrounded by flares, flags, and 90 minutes of non-stop chanting that captured Argentina’s passion for football. A relaxing day at a nearby ranch followed, complete with sunshine, swimming, and a traditional asado, an Argentinian barbecue served in rounds, featuring every cut of beef imaginable.
During their week in Rosario, pupils joined lessons at both the Fisherton and Centro campuses of Colegio San Bartolomé, where they were warmly welcomed by staff and students alike. They enjoyed a range of cultural and academic activities, from learning to make empanadas and taking part in a competitive football tournament, to a tango class and even candle and perfume making in Chemistry. Attending daily lessons alongside their hosts offered a unique insight into Argentinian school life and language learning.
Outside of school, time with host families provided the most authentic experience of all. Whether sharing relaxed evenings at home, meeting extended families over Sunday asados, or exploring the city together, pupils experienced Rosario as locals rather than tourists. Visits to the national flag monument, the opera house, planetarium, and historic sites helped deepen their appreciation for the city’s heritage and culture.
Leaving Rosario, the group travelled to Buenos Aires for the final leg of their journey. Highlights included a city tour of Argentina’s capital, exploring the colourful neighbourhood of La Boca, visiting the iconic La Bombonera stadium, and attending a spectacular tango show accompanied by a three-course meal. Their trip concluded with visits to the Plaza de Mayo and the grave of Eva Perón, fitting reflections on Argentina’s rich cultural and political history.
Reflecting on the trip, Upper Sixth pupil Evie M (Q, UVI), said:
“Our trip to Rosario, Argentina was a truly immersive experience. Our host families welcomed us warmly into their homes and introduced us to Argentinian culture. We have not only improved our Spanish skills, but we also formed friends and connections that we will take away for life.”

The exchange offered an exceptional opportunity to develop language skills, build friendships, and experience first-hand the warmth and cultural richness of Argentina, a true celebration of Shrewsbury’s global outlook.
