Pfirsich Preis

At the end of the Summer term, Lulu G (QEH,VI) was the recipient of the Pfirsich Preis and was fortunate enough to attend a week-long German course in a language school in Munich.

The Pfirsich Preis is an award which was generously set up by Mrs Peach in order to honour the amazing commitment of her late husband, Huw, who spent many years leading the German department here at Shrewsbury School.

Lulu is the second recipient of the Pfirsich Preis with old Salopian Jessica Fraser-Andrews having also been to Munich the previous year. Applications for this year’s Pfirsich Preis are now open to current 5^th and 6^th form Germanists. Some of Lulu’s reflections from her Munich trip are below:

“Letzten Juli bin ich nach München gefahren für einen Sprachkurs und ich bin bei einer Gastmutter geblieben. Das Programm wurde von Frau Peach bezahlt und wird daher als Pfirsich-Preis bezeichnet. Ich bin sehr dankbar für diese wunderbare Erfahrung und, obwohl sie nur eine Woche dauerte, habe ich wirklich gesehen, wie sich meine Deutschkenntnisse verbessert haben. Jeden Morgen fuhr ich allein mit der Straßenbahn zur Sprachschule. Die ersten Tage verbrachte ich auf dem Level A2 und wurde dann mit zunehmender Kompetenz auf das höhere Level B1 umgestellt. Ich habe deutsche Grammatik gelernt, zum Beispiel die Vergangenheitsform und Fälle, und wir haben auch neue Vokabeln gelernt, die helfen, dass deutsche Leben besser zu verstehen. An drei Tagen machten wir Ausflüge. Einer führte uns zur Allianz Arena, einer zur Münchner Residenz, und der letzte war zum Baden an einen See. Ich habe auch tolle Freunde aus der ganzen Welt im Programm kennengelernt und jeden Tag nach der Schule sind wir durch München gefahren und haben viele Aktivitäten unternommen, wie zum Beispiel Einkaufen gehen, im Eisbach schwimmen und Picknick machen. Dann, als ich zu meiner Gastmutter zurückging, sprachen wir meistens Deutsch. Insgesamt hatte ich eine tolle Zeit in München und das ständige Eintauchen in die deutsche Sprache hat mir geholfen, selbstbewusster im Deutschsprechen zu werden."

"Last July I went to Munich for a language course and stayed with a host mother. The program was paid for by Mrs. Peach and is therefore called the Peach Prize. I am very grateful for this wonderful experience and, although it only lasted a week, I really saw how my German skills improved. Every morning I took the tram alone to the language school. I spent the first few days at level A2 and was then moved up to the higher level B1 as my competence increased. I learned German grammar, for example the past tense and cases, and we also learned new vocabulary to help understand German life better. On three days we went on excursions. One took us to the Allianz Arena, another to the Munich Residence, and the last one was to go swimming at a lake. I also met great friends from all over the world in the program, and every day after school we explored Munich and did many activities, such as going shopping, swimming in the Eisbach, and having picnics. Then, when I returned to my host mother, we mostly spoke German. Overall, I had a great time in Munich and the constant immersion in the German language helped me become more confident in speaking German."
