All Night Sports Marathon returns to raise money for Restart Africa

On Friday 17th February, thirty-two of our most enthusiastic and energetic pupils will take on the challenge of an All Night Sports Marathon in aid of Restart Africa.

Having been on a brief hiatus for 2 years, the sporting event will take place at the gates of February Exeat in order to raise money for our chosen international charity.

From 9pm to 7am, in their teams of eight, pupils will be competing in ten different sports, one sport each hour. Competition will be fierce; there may be blisters; reserves of flapjacks and hot chocolate will be mercilessly raided.

We know that Salopians both love their sport and can always be relied on to step up and help others: nonetheless the staff had not predicted quite how popular this event would be. So many pupils signed up that we are hoping to run a second event later in the year if we can find a suitable date.

By the morning we expect our students will be trying to catch a nap wherever they can before heading home to a hot shower and a welcoming bed. They will also be buoyed by the knowledge that money they have raised will have made a huge impact on children’s lives in Africa.

Restart Africa is a charity based in Gilgil, Kenya whose primary aim is to rescue destitute street children. They give them shelter, care, education and security. They also run projects to help the wider community in Gilgil, providing employment, opportunity and self-respect for local people.

Our goal at Shrewsbury school is to raise as much money as possible to help improve the educational outcomes of the children in their care. Every £360 raised pays for the education of a street child from Kenya for a whole year. Raising not only their own aspirations, welfare and care; but also supporting the whole community of Gilgil, Kenya.
