Old Salopians

Now in its seventh year, the sight of cars gathering on Central is a signature part of the day for Old Salopians and current pupils.

Over twenty interesting cars gathered on Saturday lunch time and Richard Jebb (I 1974-78) finally made it in his immaculately restored Porsche. No sooner had the photo drone landed and the heavens opened and everyone went off to enjoy lunch in QUOD - this reminds me that SDC branded umbrellas should be available for next year's OS day!

The AGM was well attended and was as much about planning fun for the next year as it was dealing with club matters. The club diary now has annual winter dinners, museum visits and driving tours all around the country. As more and more school leavers are expressing interest in the Drivers Club, James Gibbon (RAJC 2019-24) has joined the committee to represent Young (Old) Salopians.

There are nine "meres" in and around Ellesmere - some close to the host venue, others much further away; some can be reached by road, others not. A sliding scale of points was allocated to each mere and club members had an hour and a half to visit the meres and accrue as many points as possible. Ultimately, the Rev Alex Aldous was the winner with 145 points which earned him some of the new Salopian Drivers Club merchandise which has just been commissioned thanks to Angus Jagger (DB 1964-68) who also took part. The day rounded off with an excellent brunch - our thanks to Paul Subbiani for his hospitality.

There were no casualties (unlike last year when John Burrowes' (DB 1967-69) Jaguar E-type failed to finish) and even the Maserati of father and son team Brent and James Gibbon (RAJC 2019-24) made it all the way round.

Look out for next year's event on OS Sunday which is already in planning...
