Last week, 14 Third Formers, accompanied by Dr Case and Dr Barrett, visited the Shewsy as part of the BASE carousel of activities.

We left school immediately after lessons and ate en route so that we could arrive in time for junior club.

We were met by John Dumbell, Senior Youth Worker, who gave us a brief introduction to the Shewsy. This made a big impression and left no one with any doubts about the brilliant work the Shewsy does to support local families and provide life-changing opportunities for the children who visit. Shortly after, the first children arrived as part of the walking bus from Faith Primary School, just round the corner. T

They were all provided with a square meal which is one of the Shewsy's vital contributions to support children and families in this community and we then had a lovely time working with the children Everyone broke up into groups, with some playing football in the sports hall, some playing Monopoly, some doing craft activities to entertain, engage and find out more about the lives of the children. They love it when groups from Shrewsbury visit and it is a great opportunity for 3rd Formers to take a leadership role and use their imagination and ingenuity to create meaningful and engaging activities. The Salopians were as disappointed to leave as the Shewsy children were to see them go and the impact of Jonn Dumbell's introduction was apparent in the quiet act of Reuben P, who gave the money he had on him to John so that it might help those unable to pay the £1 for Junior Club.

The next big event to support the Shewsy is the whole school sponsored walk in September 2026 and by ensuring that all 5-year Salopians visit the Shewsy, the hope is that fundraising efforts this year will be stronger than ever and that as L6th Formers, they will be inspired to dig more deeply into life at the Shewsy over a two-day residential course.

Eliza G said of her visit to The Shewsy:

“On my visit to the Shewsy, I had the most amazing time colouring and playing grab the mic with all the girls. They where all so friendly and welcoming and I could easily tell that the Shewsy was a lovely community the second the kids came in. The trip showed me that even when things are tough, a safe place with kind people can help anyone find their own path. The Shewsy is really important because it's a safe place where kids can learn cool skills…and just be themselves which I loved. One of my favourite memories was when a little girl gave me a snowman snowflake, she had made from paper just as we were leaving ( it is now on my pinboard at school ) the Shewsy is one of the most heartwarming and unforgettably amazing places I have ever been to.”
