Shrewsbury
Remarkable Performances Mark Season’s Start for Boys' Cricket
We are only two weeks into the season, but Shrewsbury's cricketers have already been busy rewriting the record books!
Early April saw our boys and girls teams take to the field for the first time this year.
After a winter which had seen them take part in a record number of off-season training sessions, with our coaching team delivering over 1500 indoor and outdoor practices to talented Salopians through the winter months.
Six days of pre-season action involved well over 40 Salopians, as well as prestigious county opposition in the form of Worcestershire, Shropshire, Cheshire, and Staffordshire amongst others.
Cricket has a long and illustrious history at Shrewsbury, with multiple national titles and pupils progressing into the professional game some of our proudest moments, yet this year's 1st XI and U17 boys have already etched their names into the record books. The 1st XI hit the highest score ever recorded by a Shrewsbury side, smashing an incredible 399-7 in just 50 overs during their victory against Worksop College. George B blasted 158 from just 89 balls, with his knock including a staggering 13 sixes and 11 fours. His is also the fastest individual score of 150+ in our history, and will be long remembered by those fortunate enough to have witnessed it.
Lancashire Academy all-rounder Liam Y had a Shrewsbury debut to remember, carrying his bat for 120 not out on debut, seeing his side to another convincing win over Worcestershire Academy as the 1st XI enjoyed a highly beneficial 3 days of development ahead of the 2026 season.
The U15 boys also had a hugely productive time together, with a stunning century for Oscar H in their win over Cheshire one of the many highlights. A courageous 7th wicket partnership of 134 between new 3rd Form entrant Nathan A and number 8 Jack S enabled the Salopians to defeat a fine Worksop College side, while the rest of the group all showed evidence of the skills that led them to the final of the ESCA T20 at Arundel Castle last season. They will be hoping to match, or even better that achievement this year.
Not to be outdone by the 1st XI record, the U17 boys notched a new one of their own on Thursday, after amassing 330-6 in just 35 overs in the Cricket Paper U17 Cup - a new Shrewsbury U17 all-time high score. Josh H struck a mighty 112 from 57 balls, with Harry P adding 110 from 83 as the Salopians booked their place in the next round.
