We recently welcomed Dr Guy Sutton to Shrewsbury for the annual ‘Brain Day’ workshop.

Dr Guy Sutton has been visiting Shrewsbury for nearly 10 years now to deliver an afternoon of lectures about the brain to our Upper Sixth Biologists - and a live brain dissection!

He never fails to delight and amaze. He is a passionate and hugely engaging speaker, and every year he brings news of the latest research from the cutting edge of neuroscience. Many studies he quoted were from 2023 and one was just a few days old.

Jennifer O'B (MSH) said: "Dr Sutton spoke to us about many different areas of research and discovery in the brain, as well as doing a brain dissection, allowing us to see different parts of the brain and help us understand how they work.

“What I found particularly interesting was the idea that we may be conscious for up to 10 minutes after cardiac death, so we are not necessarily dead at the time our heart stops. The research he showed us demonstrated that there are delta waves in our brain after the cardiac arrest similar to those we have during deep sleep, suggesting that we may still be conscious during those final minutes. He also explained that our time perception is skewed during this time, so having your life flash before your eyes may in fact be true."

Angel L (MSH) added: "My favourite part was about electronic interfaces with the brain. The fact that computers/AI can now precisely present what you’re thinking on a screen through interpreting brain waves is amazing! This brings hope to patients in a conscious coma / vegetative state."
