Shrewsbury’s Rifle Club continues its proud tradition of producing a Shooting Team to compete in the National Schools’ Ashburton Competition at Bisley.

This year’s squad showed outstanding commitment to travel to Bisley during the third week of the summer holiday.

In its 156th and final year with the cadet target rifle, this was a big competition with an entry of 383 shooters from 32 schools.

There are various competitions during the week and our best five aggregate scores during the Ashburton led to us retaining the Major Elers Cup. Other notable success came with Izzie N (G, UVI) and Kitty Ruan (2024, M) placed 5th in the Schools’ Pair category, and Alex MacKinnon (I,UVI), Jack L (O, LVI), Lilly B-S (MSH, V) and James C (Ch, IV) achieving a 7th place in the Ashburton Four competition.

The Club has a great tradition of producing shooters who excel at sniper fire. This year’s best pair combined last year’s Captain, Kitty Ruan (2024, M), with James C (Ch, IV) - who only started shooting in last year’s Third Form society.  They combined with precise accuracy to win the McQueen Pair and were rewarded with ‘Imperial’ gold medals. Kitty was delighted to complete the set, having previously won bronze and silver medals.

The Club continues to flourish with growing numbers keen to test themselves at Bisley – returning with two trophies is an outstanding achievement for this talented team and testament to the dedication and commitment of Salopian shooters.

James C (Ch, IV), said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed Bisley as it gave me an opportunity to significantly improve my rifle shooting experience, which no doubt helped me in winning the sniping competition.”
