As part of the FA’s ‘Let Girls Play’ initiative and in alignment with the celebration of International Women’s Day today, it was especially pleasing to welcome over 25 teams to Shrewsbury School for our annual Seven-a-Side Girls’ Football Festival on Wednesday.

Building on the success of the tournament last year, Wednesday’s festival provided a platform for girls to engage with football in a supportive and encouraging environment. Unlike the snow of last year, however, Top Common was greeted with glorious sunshine, setting the stage for an afternoon of excitement and friendly competition.

The tournament saw remarkable performances from participating teams, with Shrewsbury School’s U16 and U14 teams both securing third place in the Shield Competitions. The U16s demonstrated exceptional teamwork and skill, overcoming some tough opponents and scoring some top-quality goals (Lyra V’s right foot rocket, for example!). Similarly, the U14s displayed impressive talent and determination, and were resilient when facing schools like Madeley Academy, Ludlow, and William Brookes. There was also an opportunity to play ‘friendship games’ against schools in different groups; all of the pitches of Top Common were full and thriving!

This event is a celebration of girls playing football and aims to encourage and empower young girls to embrace the sport. It was a fantastic afternoon of shared enjoyment and competition, showcasing the talent and potential of female footballers. A big thank you to the groundsmen, events and catering teams, as well as the sports staff, whose efforts ensured the smooth running of the afternoon and contributed to its overall success.

The Juniors now look to their ISFA Semi-Final against Ardingly College on Monday, March 11th, with a 1 pm KO on PH 3G – support welcome, as always!
