On Monday evening, the school’s premier small jazz ensemble, Fraggle Brothers, performed a 30-minute set at the Eastside Jazz Club.

This premier jazz venue is part of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Old Salopian Ethan Poon (drums), Ivo W (I, UVI) (piano), Jensen K (SH, UVI) (bass), Max D (I, UVI) (sax) and Bill G (SH, UVI) (vocals) impressed everybody with a very polished and varied set that included such gems as Skylark, Beautiful Love and Take the A Train. Their performance was followed by an awesome performance by the Conservatoire Jazz orchestra of Stan Tracey’s Genesis Suite conducted by his son, Clark Tracey.

Ed Puddick, the Jazz Lecturer who looked after our band, was mightily impressed by the adventurous setlist and the ease with which the Fragglers negotiated the challenges. Jeremy Price, the Head of Jazz at Birmingham Conservatoire was full of praise for their polished professionalism and made it clear that he would value further interaction between his institution and ours.

Mike Skipper

Head of Academic Music
