Each year, around 300,000 young mathematicians take part in UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Of those, the top 1.5% take part in an Olympiad follow on round and of those, only the top 100 receive one of the coveted medals.

This year, two pupils have received a Silver Medal in their respective age group Olympiad competitions. Zara W (M, IV) and Kaisei T (Rt, V) deserve significant credit for their achievements in this competition. I look forward to seeing them go on to further success in the Senior Maths Challenge going forwards!

The Olympiad competitions are the pinnacle of UK Mathematics and one of the most challenging mathematics contests in the country and world. The competition itself consists of a demanding three-hour paper with just six fiendish problems. The paper is then marked based on the knowledge, elegance, clarity of communication and efficiency of approach on show. To give you a taste of the challenge, we have included one of the ‘simpler’ questions below.
