Impressive Results for Shrewsbury Rowing at Head of the Dee
Shrewsbury delivered a strong and encouraging set of performances at this year’s Head of the Dee internal fixture, racing alongside Queen’s Park RC, King’s Chester, and Royal Chester RC. Although the squad had received a weather warning the day before, the expected disruption did not materialise, and the crews instead found themselves racing in calm, bright, albeit slightly chilly conditions that made for an enjoyable and productive day on the river.
The standout result of the fixture came from the WJ18 quad, whose performance secured 1st place overall on GMT. Their 95.5% GMT score was the highest of the event and ensured that they claimed the Headship title, marking a significant achievement for the group and providing a clear benchmark for their continued progression. The boys’ J18 1st VIII also delivered a notable result, finishing 1st in their category and taking home medals. Their time placed them competitively within the wider field and contributes positively to the developing rhythm of the senior boys’ squad as they move further into the racing year.
Across the programme, Shrewsbury crews produced a series of steady and coherent performances, with many boats demonstrating the benefits of recent training as well as increasing confidence in race-day processes. The fixture provided valuable practice in executing structured pieces under pressure and allowed athletes to gather useful data ahead of upcoming events. The combination of positive results, stable conditions, and worthwhile race exposure made the outing a productive marker in the squad’s early-season trajectory.
