On the 11th of March, a group of Lower Sixth students, including myself, had the privilege of gaining a valuable insight in how a strong and supportive community can positively shape people’s lives.
During our time at the Shewsy, located in Everton, we learned that regardless of gender, ages, or background, everyone can find a place where they feel safe, welcomed, and valued. The Shewsy offers far more than simply activities: it provides love, support, and a genuine sense of belonging.
After spending two days at the Shewsy, we were first introduced to the dedicated members of the club who warmly welcomed us and shared their personal connections to the organisation. We were shown various parts of the surrounding community, including the local primary school where we collected children for the junior club, nearby allotments, and the local park where young children learnt how to ride their bikes. At the junior club, we were quickly embraced by the younger members, who were eager to involve us in activities such as indoor football, tag, gymnastics, and arts and crafts. Throughout our time there, we were never left feeling like outsiders. Both the children and members of the senior club were humble, respectful, and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. From trying traditional dishes such as “Scouse” to stepping in as a goalkeeper for the junior club’s football games, every moment was filled with enjoyment, fulfilment, and genuine happiness.
None of these experiences would have been possible without the remarkable dedication and care shown by the staff at the Shewsy, who gave their time and energy. Our group is especially grateful to Mrs Smiter and Mr Wain for accompanying us throughout the trip, and to Doc Case, whose commitment to the programme makes opportunities like this for pupils like myself.
The Shewsy teaches young people that even during moments of difficulty, they are never truly alone – there is always support and how ahead. The organisation celebrates individuality and ensures that every person feels accepted and valued, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or what they look like. The Shewsy truly embodies its guiding principle: “where people matter more than things”.
I am deeply grateful for this experience. It has reinforced for me the importance of community, empowerment, and teamwork – something I will remember for many years to come.
