Shrewsbury's Eco-Committee Update

As the year draws to a close, many of the school’s leadership positions have been passed to new hands.
As part of that change of the guard, we are proud to announce the new set of leaders for the Eco Committee. We received a variety of responses on why students wanted to join the eco committee, among them we particularly thought the response of Tilda E (3, M) encapsulated the ethos of eco committee:
“The main reasons for me wanting to join the Eco Committee team were, not only to help the environment in every way I possibly can, but also, as a current 3rd former, to give younger years a voice in decision making. Additionally, I will hopefully be able improve my leadership skills during my time in this position.”
Since the wildflower meadow in front of KH was first sown by Eco Committee members in 2021, this is the first year we have seen a small population of cowslips emerge. The cowslip is a native spring wildflower once common across the British countryside, recognised for its clusters of bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers and delicate fragrance. In recent decades, however, it has declined in many areas due to habitat loss and changes in land use, making its appearance here a big sign of progress for Shrewsbury’s Eco Committee. Building on this success, maintenance of the meadow and wild areas of the school site will now be led by Bethan R (L6, EDH) and Helena T (5, MSH).
The reduction of food waste, along with the continued development of the wormery initiative, will now be overseen by Kit M (5, O), Faisal A-N (L6, S), and Alistair T (L6, Ch). The committee is also proud to be working alongside Veolia, the company responsible for waste management around the school, to improve recycling and waste systems across the site whilst helping to meet the school’s sustainability targets.
Meanwhile, a range of events will continue in full stride, including the film screening on the 15th of May and the Eco Committee picnic on the 23rd of June. These events will now be supervised by Lyra V (L6, MSH), Charlie C (5, I), and Tilda E (3, M).
Bigger projects relating to renewable energy are also on the horizon, with exciting developments to be led by Evan P (4, S) and Zainab A-M (L6, G).
Lastly, we are proud to announce that the Eco Echo, our newspaper covering all eco-related news around the school, alongside a collection of long-awaited environmental pieces calling for the protection of our planet and the life it sustains, is set to be released this term. The following issue will then be published at the same time next year, led by Zainab A-M (L6, G) and Alistair T (L6, Ch).
